Left Hook Ski Run, Whistler Canada
24" x 48" x 1"
Title: “Moonlit Alpine”, Whistler Canada
Description: Black on black the textured alpine trees are snow tipped and lit by the moon.
“Moonlit Alpine” is a little different from my normal colour palette. Applying thick black paint on a black background proved to be a challenge but I absolutely love the result. The palette knife trees catch and reflect the light, which was enhanced by tipping the trees in a soft off-white.
As tricky as it was to paint, photographing it has proved equally challenging. “Moonlit Alpine” changes depending on the light, the time of day and the angle. The background becomes silvery, hinting out a nighttime snowfall or the way moonlight simultaneously washes out colour and illuminates.
For those who have been to Whistler Canada, this is Left Hook. As you come out of the Roundhouse, it is 90º to your right, the cliff face above Franz. I chose a tall narrow canvas of 24”x48” to enhance the feeling of steepness, the precariousness of the trees perched on the edge of rocks and drops.
You can see lots of close up photos below, taken from different angles showing how light and perspective change this painting.
