Title: “Peak to Peak, Whistler”
Painting Description & Insights
This painting is a reminder that the next peak is on its way. We have been suspended, weightless in time, moving forward but standing still. We are together but apart. Yet beauty still surrounds us. With distance and time thrust upon us as COVID19 pervades, we are given an opportunity to appreciate the people and moments we previously took for granted.
Peak to Peak Whistler is dedicated to those whose hearts and careers are in the mountains….
All the ski instructors who hone their skills year on year so we can progress past the snowplough and experience the carving whoosh, finally understand what the fresh pow ravings are all about, and enable us to stab and punch our way through the bumps. I couldn’t possibly list all the ski instructors who have had a hand in my skiing – level 4s, you know who you are, big kisses to you all and Yes Ski Improvement
It’s dedicated to all the ski patrollers who risk so much, so we don’t. All the groomers and lifties that get us smoothly to where we want to be.
All the people and small businesses who make our (never long enough) ski vacations a joy. Vanessa @ecologyst_ who makes the best flat white, not only in Whistler, but that I’ve ever tasted (and I’m Australian!). @splitzwhistler for my “big day on the hill” recovery burger. @gone_eatery for my “big day on the hill yesterday” recovery paleo brunch. @purebread_canada for my “big day on the hill tomorrow” calorie loading (that’s a real thing…right?). The galleries supporting and promoting artists @whistlercontemporarygallery @artswhistler and The Plaza Galleries. Barry @ski_connexions who moulds ski boots so I’m connected to the snow and not crying in agony, plunging my bare foot into the snow for relief.
With the abrupt closure of ski resorts all over the world, and the massive impact this will have on all the individuals who have built their lives and careers in the mountains, I look forward to seeing you all on the next peak.
In the meantime as I move from Peak to Peak, I will keep my tips up, engage my core, keep my arse pointed up the hill and focus on the gaps, not the trees rushing towards me.
